UNIVERSITY SENATE MEETING
MINUTES
March 22, 1995

The Chancellor convened the meeting at 3:10 p.m.

The following members were absent: David Allen, Cooke, Dauenhauer, Franke, Martin, Mercuro, Rudd, Stewart-Savage, Zonana

1. Approval of the Minutes of February 21, 1995 meeting Approved as circulated. David Barbe was not absent at the February 21 meeting as indicated.

2. Remarks by the Chancellor

A. Salary program approved by the Board. The LSU System set a policy - salary increases are a top priority, you can self fund a salary program.

B. LSU System approved all UNO sabbaticals.

C. A UNO theater production by Shirley Sargent was selected to be presented at the Kennedy Center. She also received a national playwright award.

D. The D-Day Museum received donation from McDermott to buy St. Lo Museum collections.

E. UNO signed a second articulation agreement with Elaine P. Nunez Community College.

F. Orleans Levee Board and a private developer will build a film production studio and the Department of Drama and Communications will use it along with SUNO.

G. We will sign a Friendship Treaty with a Honduran University on April 11, 1995.

3. Remarks by the Provost

A. DOC II - It looks like we will have 34-35 Ph.Ds granted this academic year.

B. Engineering and Applied Science Ph.D. review team will here this week.

C. Wellness Center - review is very positive; support from students and faculty.

4. Report of the Athletic Council

The AC continued to meet with coaches: February 14 - Tom Schwaner Sun Belt has new round-robin format for baseball, instead of divisions. Zephyrs have put in improvements to Privateer Park. March - Men's and Women's track Coaches UNO will host Sun Belt track tournament for next five years at Tad Gormley. Congratulate Men's and Women's basketball teams on fine seasons.

5. Report on the LSU Board of Supervisors Meeting

Tom Schlunz reported for Gary Allen:
Raises were approved. It was pointed out by the Board that the cost of moving UNO salaries to SREB is $5.4 million.

Approval of Gulf Coast Region Technology Center (College of Engineering and Lamar University) - Self funded

Authorization of paying off bonds on Bienville Hall

Change in lease contract with the Zephyrs.

6. Report by the Policy Committee

Jeff Oescher reported that the PC was tabulating evaluations of Dean Coulter.

7. Committee Reports

A. Committee A has met with UNO lawyer who is looking at harassment statement. The Committee is also looking at staff handbook. Will defer report to next meeting.

B. Committee B reported on amplified music. (APPENDIX B)

A 1992 Senate Committee established a policy. Committee B feels that the original policy is adequate and should be enforced. Therefore, no further action is necessary.

C. No report.

A. Gary Allen - SREB publication on higher education. We need to better educate the public as to the value of higher education to the community. If you want a copy, see your Senator.
